Winter pass closures do not necessarily mean the resort access road is closed. Check the specific highway segment and your destination’s official travel guidance.

How to check and share a highway-specific live map

Open the official Caltrans QuickMap, select the road-condition layers (Full Closures, Highway Information, Chain Controls and CHP Incidents), and enable Cameras if you want available traffic-camera views. Zoom to the resort access highway and select markers to read the details.

Save a resort-specific view: Once the map is positioned over Highway 108, Highway 4 or another resort route, select QuickMap’s Share feature and copy its link. Caltrans says shared links preserve the map’s location and zoom. This provides a highway-centered live map link without embedding the Caltrans website. See the official QuickMap instructions ↗.

The geographic maps on SearchResort do not show live Caltrans events. The official QuickMap links provide the latest available road information; always check the displayed report timestamps.

Before You Drive: your winter trip checklist

Take a few minutes to check these details before setting out, then recheck for your return journey.

  • Check your full route. Review official highway reports and Caltrans QuickMap. Check the affected road segment and report time, including local access roads.
  • Review chain controls. Read the official Caltrans requirements and confirm that your vehicle and traction equipment meet the current rules.
  • Check weather for the journey. Review National Weather Service forecasts and alerts for your route, destination and return day.
  • Confirm the final approach. Ask your hotel or cabin host about driveway snow removal, parking, check-in and any local access restrictions. Confirm resort operations directly with the resort.
  • Prepare your backup plan. Review cancellation terms, save the property contact and address, and allow time to change or postpone the trip if conditions require it.

A lodging reservation does not confirm road access. Follow current official instructions and posted controls.

Storm forecasts and winter travel

Check National Weather Service forecasts and alerts for your destination before leaving. A weather warning and a confirmed road closure are different: check both the forecast and Caltrans road reports.

Conditions can change during your trip. Recheck before departure and follow posted signs and instructions from Caltrans or CHP. For highway information by phone, call 1-800-427-7623.
