EAST BAY WINTER GETAWAYS · HIGHWAYS 4 & 108
A snow weekend, with a place to stay
Plan the snow day, choose a nearby stay, and make time for family fun.
Plan family sledding and tubing around Bear Valley or the Dodge Ridge–Pinecrest area. Compare the activity first, then choose a hotel, lodge or cabin that fits your route and your family.

Plan ahead for winter: Snowplay is seasonal. A November hotel reservation does not guarantee snow or an open activity. Confirm the operator’s current opening status before booking a snow-focused trip.

Choose one corridor for the weekend
Plan a first visit around one main activity each day. Choose a lesson or snowplay session, compare nearby stays, and check the road report before departure. A pass closure higher in the mountains does not by itself tell you whether your particular resort route is open; read the named road segments in the official report.

Bear Valley area: sledding and tubing on Highway 4
Bear Valley Adventure Company operates separate groomed sledding and tubing areas. Participants walk uphill; these are not lift-served downhill ski runs. Its published rules allow only its rental sleds and tubes on the private groomed hills, and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
This is a different operator and activity from downhill skiing at Bear Valley Mountain Resort. Check the snowplay location rather than navigating automatically to the ski lifts.

Where to stay
Compare Bear Valley village lodging with Arnold options farther down Highway 4. Arnold is an overnight base, not the ski resort or snowplay venue itself. Compare the actual winter route to the activity and ask about parking and driveway maintenance.

Dodge Ridge area: tubing at Leland Snowplay
For a Highway 108 family snow trip, consider Leland High Sierra Snowplay near Strawberry and Pinecrest. It is a separate snowplay destination from Dodge Ridge Mountain Resort; do not assume a Dodge Ridge ski ticket includes Leland admission.
Leland’s published information describes tubing with equipment included and separate access options based on height. Confirm equipment rules, child height requirements, tickets and operating days for your visit. Check the calendar’s season and year; older rates and closing notices can remain on the website.
